PES+N builds on the proven performance of PES media by adding a second, engineered treatment layer to deliver comprehensive nutrient removal, including significant elimination of bioavailable nitrogen, typically exceeding 50% reduction in Total Nitrogen.
The system combines two natural processes in a vertically integrated design. In the upper layer, PES media removes phosphorus while simultaneously converting organic nitrogen and ammonium into nitrate through natural biological activity. The treated water then flows into a deeper layer enriched with a sustainable carbon source, where nitrate is removed through denitrification—converting it into harmless nitrogen gas.
How It Works
- Stage 1: PES Media Layer
Removes phosphorus and promotes conversion of ammonia and organic nitrogen into nitrate in an oxygen-rich setting. - Stage 2: Carbon-Enriched Layer
The pre-treated water then flows into a deeper layer enriched with a carbon source. Saturated conditions and lack of oxygen promote denitrification, where nitrate is biologically converted to nitrogen gas and safely released to the atmosphere.

Industry-Leading Removal Rates:*
- Total nitrogen: 50%
- Total phosphorus: 80%
- TSS: 95%
- Metals: 80%
*Based on removal over 20-year project lifetime
Performance Specification
- Loading Rate: 2.5 to 4 feet per day
- Infiltration Rate: Outlet controlled and variable
Key Benefits
- Same high phosphorus removal as the PES with more effective nitrogen removal
- Used for nutrient removal for TMDLs and ERPs
- Used to treat Agricultural runoff, impaired lakes and rivers
