PES media is an advanced filtration solution designed to remove phosphorus to ultra-low levels while delivering long-term reliability and environmental sustainability.
Engineered from aluminum-based water treatment residuals sourced from drinking water and surface water facilities, the PES transforms a recycled material into a powerful treatment media—supporting a circular, resource-efficient approach to water quality.
At the core of its performance is a natural adsorption process: negatively charged phosphorus ions are strongly attracted to positively charged media particles, where they form strong stable bonds. This results in a highly effective phosphorus removal system, which is recycled into a slow-release fertilizer for agricultural facilities with no risk of release back into the environment.
How it Works
- Particulate Phosphorus Removal
As water flows through the PES media, suspended solids containing particulate phosphorus are captured within the media matrix, preventing sediment-bound phosphorus from being discharged downstream. - Dissolved Phosphorus Removal
Soluble phosphorus that remains in the water is attracted to and strongly bound by the media's positively charged adsorption sites. This process removes dissolved phosphorus to very low concentrations, helping protect receiving waters from eutrophication and algae growth. The captured phosphorus remains securely bound and does not leach back into the environment.

Industry-Leading Removal Rates
- Total phosphorus: 80%
- Total nitrogen: up to 30%
- TSS: 95%
- Metals: 80%
*Based on removal over 25-year project lifetime
At the end of its service life, the spent media, after appropriate testing, can be repurposed as a beneficial soil enrichment product, returning nutrients to the landscape.
Performance Specification
- Hydraulic Loading Rate: 4 feet per day
- Infiltration Rate: 20 to 50 inches per hour
Key Benefits
- Applied to advanced phosphorus removal or polishing to meet low effluent discharge
- To meet total phosphorus TMDL compliance
- Can be applied to Alternative Water Treatment (AWT) bolt-on / WWTP polishing
- Can operate under variable hydrologic conditions and does not export nutrients after dry periods
